I think that the current model of charging by the amount of data used on mobile phone data networks inhibits the growth of this industry. In order to grow, these carriers should do a tier based system based on the speed of the network. For example, if the 4G network is the current fastest system, this should be priced higher than 3G, Edge and anything older (only as old as the carriers can maintain these networks). This way, the fastest anyone can get depends on the device and how much a consumer is willing to spend on the data plan. All data plans, by the way, are unlimited. This gives incentive to anyone ready to upgrade to buy a smartphone to go out and find the one they want and remove the worry about whether or not they have enough data to do what they want. Also, they are able to go with the plan that fits their budget and carriers are forced to be more competitive to progress the rate of technology.
